Please put a link to your PDF along with the title and author of the work you would like to be manually OCRed and formatted into an epub in a reply to this post, with one work per comment in order to make it easier to organise.

Works of significant importance to revolutionary theory and history will be given priority however this work is very intensive and there is no guarantee that your request will be fulfilled. If you are volunteering to convert a work, please reply to the request comment to let others know that you are working on it so as to avoid duplicating efforts.

There are a few rules that you are expected to adhere to when requesting books. It can be quite a bit of work to track down books so please put in the effort to follow these rules when making a request:

Adhere to all site rules, don't cause drama, be respectful of others, don't give spoilers for books, and don't criticise other's choice in books
Don't like that particular book? Nobody asked. Move along.

Please check the existing libraries first
Specifically LibGen, Anna's Archive, and Z-Library (if you have access).
This will save your time and mine.

One request per post
This helps me keep track of what I have done and what I need to do next.
If you make a list of books then I'm going to need to open up a word document and work between your post, the document, and all of the sources I'm digging through simultaneously which increases the overall effort and mental energy it requires

Don't abbreviate
Full book titles, full author names (as they are written on their books - I don't expect you to go on wikipedia to discover if some author has a middle name they don't use.)
If the author uses initials on their books (e.g. George R. R. Martin, James S. A. Corey), please use initials too. If a book has a subtitle, please provide that.

Specify your preferred format in the title by putting it in square brackets e.g. [Audiobook] or [PDF]
Square brackets are strongly preferred as some book titles use parentheses so square brackets makes it visually distinct.
Note that I will endeavour to get the book in your preferred format however this is not always possible so you may need to handle conversions yourself. If you want more than one format, you can put the desired formats in parentheses in the same post.

If you get your requested book, please edit your post title
Let myself and others know if you have gotten a response from me with your requested book by appending FULFILLED to the end of your post.
This will allow me to see at a glance which books I still need to look for and it signals to other users that this book is available.

Please only request audiobooks where you have checked that there is a professionally-released version available
If you don't check this first, then there's a good chance I'm going to waste my time trying to track down a non-existent audiobook.

Don't spam book requests
If the book wasn't available on the piracy scene last week, chances are that it won't be there this week either. Be patient. I will go back through old requests periodically to see if they are available on the piracy scene.

For textbooks, please specific the edition you are seeking and provide the ISBN
Textbook authors are painfully unimaginative with titles and often they write multiple books with the same title and it has the same author so an ISBN helps me to distinguish between different book options.
I will endeavour to get the correct edition however if I cannot, I will provide you with the nearest possible edition I can find - often there is very little variation that occurs between editions as this is a publishing scam to choke out the textbook reselling market.

For book requests that are non-English
Being outside the Latin alphabet gets tricky for me as navigating and identifying downloads in a very unfamiliar language is hard, but I'll do my best.
If you provide the title and author in the Latin alphabet as well as its native alphabet (where applicable), occasionally this can yield successes.
Providing the ISBN can make a very big difference in how successful I am at obtaining non-English works.

Are you interested in a book request that someone else has made?
If so, please leave a short comment requesting that you be notified if the book is made available. I will reply to your comment if I can get the book so you will be notified of this.

PDFs with OCR
OCR is notoriously bad in PDFs, especially older ones. There's very little chance that I'll be able to find a decent OCRed version of a PDF unless there are multiple copies of the same book available in the piracy scene, which isn't that common.
PDFs can be OCRed manually but it requires a lot of effort to do so, often hours of painstaking work, and I do not have the capacity to do this for you (except in the case where it is a work of significant importance to revolutionary theory or history, where you might be able to convince me to take on the task of OCRing the work.)

If I provide you with the wrong book or there is an error in the book that makes it unreadable
Let me know by pinging me. It would take a lot of time to double-check that every linked book is actually functioning as normal and that it is the correct upload. Mistakes happen, just let me know the issue and I'll go hunting again.

I am able to rip ebooks from The Internet Archive
You are welcome to request books that are only available on the Internet Archive but not on the other libraries listed above. I will rip the book and make it available for you.

Some books do not have an official ebook release but they can still be available on the piracy scene
This especially applies to older books. You are welcome to request but know that there's less likelihood of someone having scanned the book themselves and uploaded it.
Often books like this have a large filesize and the scanning work is not of high quality but there isn't much that can be done about this.

Audiobook narrator preference can be included in your request
I will endeavour to find your preferred narrator but there's a likelihood that you'll have to make do with what I manage to find.

Audiobooks will be hosted on TankieTube
There's the possibility for CatBox to store the audiofiles but the upload limitations can be prohibitive and it requires a lot of effort to edit an audiobook down - I don't have the capacity to do this. If you want the audio file uploaded to CatBox, let me know and if the filesize permits I will upload it there.

To listen to audiobooks on TankieTube via Android, consider GrayJay if you want to turn your screen off or your mobile browser is struggling with it

The most time consuming part of making an ebook for me, has been transcribing the text. OCR certainly helps immensely, but there are still errors and problems. If you have some time and want to help you can transcribe PDFs into HTML.

Step 1: Find a PDF

The first step is to look for the best possible PDF.
A "true text" PDF (as opposed to an image with OCR-text PDF) is the best case scenario, as they can be transformed into an EPUB using Calibre.^[I will enable the "Do not split on page breaks" and set "Split files larger than" to 0/Disable in EPUB Output, as otherwise it can split in weird places] You will likely still need to find a scan of the book to compare to.
If you can’t find a "true text" PDF, look for the highest quality scan. If the PDF doesn’t contain OCR, or it’s of bad quality, you’ll have to do OCR yourself. I usually use ocrmypdf to do so, although I haven’t gotten Calibre to create an EPUB from the outputted PDF with OCR, and instead used ocrmypdf for it’s --sidecar option which gives me plain text.^[In this ocrmypdf is essentially just a front-end for tesseract (the actual OCR program) because tesseract can’t take PDFs as input] You can send me a message with a link to the PDF asking to do the OCR or EPUB-ification and I’ll send back the result. If you don’t need my help, do still send me a message saying you intend to transcribe the book, and do include links.

Step 2: Transcribe

Once you have your EPUB or plain text, you’ll start on the actual "transcription."
The EPUB can be opened in Calibre’s ebook editor (simply click "Edit book" in the UI) or opened with a ZIP manager and the HTML file extracted and edited with your favourite editor. The plain text can be opened in any kind of editor^[Maybe also something like MS Word or LO Writer, although I don’t know if it can export as HTML and how well it will be, I’d rather you use something else], even notepad, but you may want to use a more capable editor like [EDIT: notepad++ and VSCode are not good. TODO: suggest something else].

Then your job is to:

  • Proofread. OCR is good, but not perfect. The true-text PDFs are usually great, but may still have minor errors, so you should proofread no matter what source you have.
  • Ensure headers/titles are inside heading elements, and they are at the correct level. Do not use a heading for it’s font size, use it for it’s semantic meaning! The books title is h1, so the chapters titles are likely to be h2, unless they are inside a part, then the part title is h2 and the chapter titles are h3. Also see the Standard Ebooks’ SEMOS for more information.
  • Ensure paragraphs are inside elements. For EPUBs that means ensuring there isn’t some incorrect breaks in the ’s, this especially happens on page breaks. For plain text adding around each paragraph.
  • Ensure italicized text is inside ^[You may see on this MDN link that is not always the correct element, and that there are other "more appropriate" elements for some things, and this is true. It would be nice if you did use the appropriate element, otherwise I will have to change them, but you don’t have to. See the Standard Ebooks’ SEMOS for when an element is appropriate] elements.
  • Re-create tables with
  • Re-create lists with and elements
  • Ensure footnote/endnote numbers are linked with , the actual footnote should be moved to the end of the chapter or section or to the end of the book. The paragraph element of the footnote should be given an id so that the can reference it with href=#insert_id_here (the hashtag is necessary, do not replace it with the id)

(TODO: Anything else?)

For EPUBs, calibre likes to add a bunch of unnecessary stuff, like <span>s and class="calibre1". So before you start working on it, you may want to remove them.
If you are using Calibre’s ebook editor—or some other editor with regex capabilities—you can remove them by opening up the find and replace, selecting "Regex" in mode (or how that works in your editor), inputting class=".*?" in Find and nothing in Replace and clicking Replace all. Then inputting <\/span> in Find (and still nothing in Replace.)
Also if you are using Calibre’s ebook editor, it has a preview on the right and it may not look good. But don’t worry your job is to ensure the text and HTML is correct, and I’ll make the ebook and ensure it looks good.

Step 3: ???

Once done, send the finished HTML (or EPUB if you’ve been working inside one) over to me. Otherwise if you are making an EPUB for yourself and not just transcribing for ComLib, I suggest you look at Standard Ebooks’ Step by Step guide

Step 4: Profit!

Your EPUB is now ready

How to access a book submitted to the LibGen upload queue

When a user fulfills a request and uploads a book to LibGen, it will appear in their upload queue for approval to be added to their library. It can take a few days before a book uploaded to LibGen will appear in their main search index but you can access it fairly easily as soon as it has been uploaded by accessing their upload queue by logging in under their generic login:

The uploader should provide you with an interim link to access the book upload. When prompted to log in, use the following credentials:

Username
genesis
Password
upload

You can store this login info in your browser if you like. Upon logging in you will see a page like this:

Just click on the link beside at Download: [from the upload queue] and you'll have access to your book.

Once your book has moved from the upload queue to the main search index, it can be accessed via the normal search options.

How to upload a book to LibGen

Check that the book hasn't already been uploaded to LibGen

Click 'Upload' in the top bar and select 'Fiction' or 'Non-fiction' based on which is appropriate from the drop-down menu

Log into LibGen using the credentials
genesis
upload

Select your file to upload

Fetch the metadata for the book by selecting which site to pull the data from and using the appropriate book identifier (e.g. ISBN), then click 'Fetch'

If the incorrect metadata is fetched or none is fetched, try a different site or a different book identifier

If the book does not have a listing on mainstream websites like Amazon or if the metadata fetched is incorrect, you can manually enter the metadata yourself on the same page.
Leave fields blank unless you know the correct info. It's not uncommon to only have partial metadata available for an upload. Do your best but don't fret - as long as the key info is accurate then the rest is less important and the entry can be updated later if someone sees fit.

When you are done entering the metadata, click 'SUMBIT!' at the bottom of the page

On the following page copy the link located beside at Download: [from the upload queue] and provide this link in a reply to the book request in this comm

In your reply to the request, please ask the user to update their post title by appending FULFILLED to the end of it
If anyone else has asked to be notified when the request has been fulfilled, reply to them letting them know or ping them.
Please ensure that the requester does not delete their post as this will allow others to find the upload.

An account is necessary to upload to TankieTube, sign up if you don't have one yet.

For all audio-only sources, please strip the audio from the video, if there is any, in order to reduce the server load and storage requirements. There are different programs available to achieve this and guides on this can be found on Google. If you have an M4A or M4B file, please convert it to MP3 before uploading.

Select Publish in the top-right of any page on TankieTube
On the 'Upload a video' page, click 'Select the file to upload' navigate to the file

On the subsequent page, select the preferred channel to upload the audiobook to (this can be changed later via editing the upload)
Set the privacy to 'Public'
Either add a thumbnail now by clicking on the 'Edit' button (note it cannot be changed in this option), or later once the upload has begun. See step below for more info.
Click the 'Upload' button

On the subsequent page, enter all relevant details as the file is uploaded and navigate to the 'Advanced Settings' tab

At the 'Video thumbnail' section, click 'Select from your device' and navigate to the image you would like to use as the video thumbnail and upload it
When the file has completed uploading and you are satisfied with the information and metadata you have entered, click the 'Publish' button once it appears.

Congratulations! You just uploaded your first audiobook. Thank you for contributing to this comm and to TankieTube to make learning more accessible!

(Note that once the audiobook is uploaded, if you do not feel comfortable being responsible for maintaining the upload and managing the moderation of comments please consider changing the ownership of the file to a larger, active channel.

This can be done by navigating to your uploaded videos and selecting the '...' menu beside the relevant upload, then selecting the 'Change ownership' option and entering the name of the user (the account who maintains your preferred channel, not the name of the channel itself) and once you have confirmed that you have entered the correct account name, click submit and await the channel to respond to your request.)
