I've always wondered if reading lips is like something that comes naturally to people or is it mostly something learned. Also how good can you get at it? Is 80-90% accuracy attainable? Is it only the mouth movement necessary to read lips or do you need the whole face?
My stepfather went entirely deaf in one ear in during a welding accident. He is able to read lips REALLY well.
My mom isn't deaf at all, but she can read lips pretty good. She used to be a speech therapist for young children, so I assume her study of what the mouth looks like when making certain sounds is the cause of her lip-reading skills.
I've tried learning to read lips and I just can't. I feel like I'd need to be deaf myself in order to learn how to do it.
