So what happens to, for example, the HP reverb g2?

I'm pretty sure you can make the g2 boot straight to steam vr at the moment so hopefully that will just become the default. Otherwise I'll just have to stop updating my computer which is less ideal.

Can it play HL Alyx? I've wanted to get a VR setup but Valve's is out of my price range and I'm not buying a Meta product. Picking up the G2 on clearance might be feasible though if it's decent.

It can play all SteamVR games.

It can, and it looks quite good. It doesn't have the finger tracking that valve's has but it still plays fine.

Yup and quite well too. I really like my g2, the tracking isn't always the best but it's good enough most of the time and the screen is really good. You do need a fairly beefy PC though. I've got a 3070 and can't run the higher end games on full settings. They still look good though.
