me too, but still helpful advice for web users

just remember that jerboa is very much in alpha and needs more developers to implement the finer stuff like this. the guy currently working on it is also a developer of lemmy itself, so he doesnt have much time for the app. if you happen to have some android dev knowledge, please see if you could contribute!

    oh shoot, I'm not familiar with it at all myself and didn't know it needed you to have decent specs.

    out of curiosity, what sort of specs are required at bare minimum and why? I'm guessing maybe for the android emulator to work properly, though in this age of insane, bloated electron software, anything could be the culprit, even the IDE :')

    According to most delvopers, you need at least 8gbs of ram and a half decent CPU. For best results 16+GB of ram is better running the emulator. You can thank google getting jetbeans to make the IDE for the language (kotlin)

    dark times for people who think software should (gasp!) actualy be efficient in its use of system resources and not require you to buy a new machine every 5 years. we're heading the wrong way, and don't remotely seem to be slowing down.

    the worst example is web development; it's gotten to the point that people are installing "desktop apps" that are in essence separate copies of chromium that only work on one website. when did software start going backwards, and how to stop it?

    Oh god do I ever hate electron. I don't subscribe to the ideal of replacing my computer or phone all the time. I have a laptop from 2008 I just got from my father I am using as a windowless Linux machine to tinker with, and a Chromebook from 2014 that I have removed the stock chrome OS thanks to mrchromebox with a open UEFI bootloader that i use for my main stuff. I plan on getting a pinephone or a used pixel 4a so I can put Debian touch or a similar full mobile Linux OS. I am tired of JavaScript eating up tons of ram, its nuts.

    damn, nice setup! mine isnt quite as impressive... i just run linux mint on my laptop (with the default proprietary bootloader :p) still so much better than windows though. i wonder if coreboot/libreboot supports my device...

    agreed on fuck js. if only more sites looked like https://motherfuckingwebsite.com/

    Thanks! I also have a old HP SFF desktop rhat was given to me from a friend becuase it was "broken". Turns out the OS was just effed and needed somthing new. Its very low spec though. Libreboot is supported on more Chromebooks then actual laptops. I'd check that out though and yours might be.

    i'll look into it, thanks! btw do you know some good communities and instances for linux/foss/programming and that sort of thing? i'm subbed to a bunch but always good to know if there's something i'm missing :)

    here's some of those I found:

    there are some general "tech" ones too

    and finally, some (digital) privacy-focused ones. That doesn't exactly fit the bill, but it's a safe bet if you're into linux and foss that you're also into privacy :)
