Liminal spaces are the subject of an Internet aesthetic portraying empty or abandoned places that appear eerie, forlorn, and often surreal. Liminal spaces are commonly places of transition (pertaining to the concept of liminality) or of nostalgic appeal.

Just why?
Probably renovating that floor, or downsizing. Lots of people aren’t shopping at malls and department stores.
Because Sears closed
Because there was another floor for the same business but perhaps the business went under (I'm thinking of Sears around here) and the mall building owners are leasing it to two different businesses.
Makes sense
