The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Yes, I'm one too. That's why I am here. The channels are generally relevant to me, and I can communicate with people, and not disappear in the mob, or deal constantly with low effort smart ass comments, trolls and bots.

What is it that you want to win? http://web.archive.org/web/20230707004346/https://ploum.net/2023-07-06-stop-trying-to-make-social-networks-succeed.html

that was very well written, but i think that i disagree with the part that mastodon gonna disappear, they are open-source, and they already made an impact, they can be maintained for other people, or others fork entire. Mastodon and Lemmy cannot "success" with the masses, and after this text, i don't think it's a bad thing anymore

I don't necessarily agree with everything they say either, but I do believe that diversity is good, and big, opaque media run for financial gain are not my personal favorites.
