MODERATORS

The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

Probably so. But then why are Android and Android Apps struggling for engagement? But more randoms, casuals, just a wider overall demographic will be needed for niche communities to become viable.

The communities I mainly communicated in on Reddit either don't exist, or have paltry engagement here.

This is why I am keeping my Reddit account active to make posts in these forums to invite others over here to build engagement.

Sounds like opportunity knocking to me. Why not start the communities you want to see here then they will already exist when others show up, and of course you will be the OG. Its a commitment I'm not gonna lie. edit: I see it seems you know this and are keeping reddit to help create a path, sorry. Leaving the post for others tho.

If I were to start a community moderator tools would one use if necessary. Definitely don't want to pay for an app to do that though. Typically have been a compliant participator but not an overlord previously.

mod tools seem fairly limited at present but I found this page describing what you can do now: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/04-moderation.html I'm still mulling over what niche I can fill myself - only just got here lol

I really need to sit down and practice what I preach, but let's be the change we want.

One day soon I'm going to go through my giant list of reddit subs, and recreate them here if they don't exist.

Even if they are mostly empty, at least show there is an interest, and give people a place to post.

As a late 40s skateboard, r/oldskaters was a joy for me, and I'd love to see that and many other communities here.
