You seem to be referring to absorption.
If you're going to be pedantic, then digestion starts with the mouth, where it's called mechanical digestion. Then, in the stomach, it's called protein digestion according to Wikipedia.
Apart from that, the stomach acid is obviously a DESTROYER of life, a task which it failed in, at this occasion. So destroy is a perfectly fine word.
