If you had it purchased through iTunes in the past, it should be upgraded for free.

I only had the SD digital copy and mine is now showing 4K, so it looks like everyone got the upgrade.

Same thing happened with the Lord of the Rings when they released the 4K edition a few years ago. It was such a nice surprise when it quietly upgraded to the new version.

Did you actually try playing it? I redeemed the Bluray digital code years ago, which was only SD at the time. It's showing under 4K in the TV app, and has the 4K badge in the Movies app, but playback is definitely not 4K.

In the iTunes Store, it's asking me to buy it for $7.99 in HD/4K, but if I click "available in SD" that version has the cloud download icon.
