We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

For those of you who build your own NAS, what are you willing to buy used? (alien.top)

I've been convinced to build my own NAS again instead of going with a Synology and I'm thinking there are probably parts that don't matter if you buy used vs new but I'm curious what your thoughts are?

I’ve bought my entire setup used hahaha. Prob not the best but it’s been working since so fingers crossed but I found 2x16tb exos for $100/each and was lucky to snap up a QNAP TS451+ (4bay) used for under $50. Also grabbed 2x3.84TB SSD (Samsung enterprise grade with less than 100 hours each for $150/piece). I feel as long as you can find lightly used, you can’t go wrong!
