I live in a house (not apartment) and ISP cable comes through to a modem that was given by them years ago before I bought the house. I suspect it to be a bit crappy and might be causing latency for online gaming. I was wondering if it would make sense to buy a better modem to have smaller latency, but I'm not sure if it would have compatibility issues with ISP itself. Anyone has any experience?

I live in Europe btw.

If you are renting the modem/router, then request a new unit. Or you can buy your own based on ISP approved list.
