Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Hello,

I am new to this sub but fairly technically literate. I make music and also do videography. Right now, I’m looking to start finally backing things up which is way overdue.

Currently, my setup is: Windows 10 OS, 8 TB WD My Book (HDD), 5 TB WD My Passport (HDD)

And I’m looking to buy this drive this Black Friday: 18 TB WD easystore (HDD)

My music files are all on the 8TB, and all my videos/photography are on the 5TB. I have NO backup locations right now, hence my desire to buy the 18TB drive.

On Windows 10, what is the most surefire way to automate the back-up process for both of these drives to write to the 18 TB? Are there common agreed-upon programs that do this? Does the script exist in Windows already? Is it manually Ctrl+C Ctrl+V files to the 18TB based on a reminder on my phone? (mostly kidding on that last one).

Please help this noob out!

For automation, I would look into some proper backup software like Veeam which has free Agent for Windows: https://www.veeam.com/agent-for-windows-community-edition.html. Also, try following the 3-2-1 backup rule: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/the-3-2-1-backup-strategy/. For example, you could add Backblaze Personal cloud.
