thing is, dogs evolved to obey and seek approval from humans. it's why so many of them will just take abuse for a long time and then finally snap.
Right? If anyone can sense anything, it's the cats who see all the ghosts in my basement.
So... how did ghosts got to your basement...?
I would imagine that person won't let them upstairs, so they're forced to stay down there.
