I was always suspicious about this. I mean there was literal coup in Moscow with Khrushchev organizing it, Zhukov personally arresting Beria, Malenkov getting with it (and look how they paid him back) and army units marching on Moscow just in case of NKVD units resisting. Beria was by all accounts completely surprised, which was incredibly weird for his supposedly classical villanous paranoia. Then he got just murdered with all traces lost.
Absolutely! I'm glad to see Stalin's image further and further exonerated as time continues to pass and lies continue to unfold, but it depresses me to think that Beria may have been a good communist and loving husband and his legacy has just been absolutely annihilated into the dust by the victors of history, and will likely never recover because the accusations are just so severe. Khruschev and his clique had every reason to discredit him the same way they did Stalin. Who knows if the USSR might still exist had Beria become chairman?
edit: I also don't shit on comrades who think Beria was these things, it's one of those propaganda items that's been ruthlessly drilled into peoples' heads. He might have personally even been a dick and I just don't know. But the cartoonish villain we are presented with never existed.
