Must have been a primo spot because he didn't even budge at the sound of the vacuum cleaner.
Sounds like your cat could do with a comfy perch. Have you tried putting a bed or towel up on a tall shelf or windowsill he can reach?
He has a cat tree but prefers being the center of attention.
