I don't understand the complaint about a headphone jack. They make dongles for USBC to headphone. Plug it into your headphone and forget it's there.

If you need to power at the same time, buy a dongle with a splitter.

3.5 mm headphone jack is much 𝕞𝕦𝕔𝕙 𝖒𝖚𝖈𝖍 more robust than USB-C port. You can slingshot your phone by the headphone cable, and both the phone and the cable will be fine.

USB-C socket gets slightly bent and you cannot charge your phone.

It's also at the bottom of the phone, so you cannot hold it normally, while the headphone jack is at the top.

That varied between brands and models, some had it at the top some at the bottom. There was no industry standard for the location.

    True.

    But!

USB port is invariably at the center of the bottom side, there's no industry standard but it's a popular convention. Which means it's inconvenient to hold a charging phone with either right or left hand.

Headphone jack is near the corner of the phone, top or bottom, it's convenient to hold with one hand - left or right depends on the manufacturer, but many opt for the jack to the left for right-handed users.

This I actually don't agree with. I don't often charge my phone when i also need it (usually I'm sleeping when it charges), but on the rare occasion that i do, it's not in the way and I can't really see why it would be? How are you holding your phone since it's inconvenient? Standing in your palm??

That's just more shit to carry. I don't want to have pockets overflowing with dongles.

The dongle stays plugged into the headphones don't it. You're carrying headphones and dongle as one piece.

Until I unplug the headphones to use an AUX port in my car. Or switch between my in-ears and over-ears. Headphones jacks are tiny and useful, and they should be included.

Needing a dongle to plug headphones into your phone is the kinda shit Apple wants people to think is normal, but is actually insane.

Who the fuck is going out with their headphones plugged in 100% of the time?

I've been using one of these USB headphone jacks... and I'd go back to the 3.5 mm audio jack in a heartbeat.

    Why?

    • The USB port collects a lot pocket lint (bigger port = more lint). This gets compressed/packed when you charge it (daily), or plug in the USB audio dongle. Eventually, it becomes harder to clean out - often needing tools.
    • I switched to magnetic USB adaptors. This keeps the dust out, but the magnetic connectors are brittle and the pins are prone to bending/breaking. I often leave the headphone with the USB dongle + the magnetic connector in my pocket. Its an annoying large wad of crap, but now with the magnet in my pocket, it sticks to my keys, coins, etc (which probably bends more pins)

All in all, its just annoying... all because manufacturers ramrod Bluetooth down our throats, charge us more for Bluetooth headphones, force us to leave Bluetooth on 24/7 (so we can use our devices to relay everyone else's tracking pucks/tags) and the manufacturers save $0.03 on each device by not having a headphone jack.

It's just another example of forcing the customer into things they don't want (just like A.I.).

So your power/data USB C port can snap off?

How about we have the boys in engineering work up a more durable dedicated audio port for something that will be plugged in when on the go?

    We can give it:

A solid, round metal plug for infinite 360-degree rotation, neutralizing cable-twist strain that would otherwise warp a rigid USB-C port.

A hollow-tunnel design with out the fragile internal circuit "tongue" found in USB-C, making it nearly impossible to snap or bend through accidental force.

And as a bonus, heavy-duty internal spring contacts that tolerate dirt and high insertion counts, and linear release mechanism so the cable will pop out cleanly during a violent tug instead of tearing up the phone’s internal electronics.

We can call this MIRACLE as the 3.5mm headphone jack. The kids will love it!

I miss the headphone jacks too but I feel like people you guys are idolising it as if it was a god-tier jack when it is/was just okay. 3.5mm jacks would break on me all the time. I've literally had the 3.5mm plug break off inside the port before

They are not perfect but they are objectively more durable, cause less damage to the device if they fail, and you don't loose your power and data port if it fails from daily use.

I know I broke more USB cables in 15 years than audio jacks over 40 years, and I was way harder on electronics 20-30 years ago. (That poor CD to car cassette adapter took some high Gforce impacts, and the walkman just lived in a backpack with the cable plugged in).
