The VASAviation video that I linked to in this thread has them being warned about extreme precipitation, has another aircraft trying to fly around the weather, has the downed aircraft flying into icing conditions and turbulence, asking ATC for alternate routes, saying that they were handling it, then shortly after reporting that air temperature was -47°C, and telling ATC that they needed to climb (I assume to get out of the weather). The VASAviation channel was commenting on the dangers of icing, and the video title was "Learjet N722BD Crash in Extreme Weather (Ice and Turbulence)". I'd assume that the root cause was likely ice.
