People do not "identify as" a gender. They ARE that gender.

The one person was going on about how I "identify as a woman".

I don't "identify" as a woman, I am a woman! (I think. Honestly I'm still figuring that one out!)

The whole "identifies as" thing comes off to me as "Oh sure, we'll TOTALLY acknowledge you're true nature!" in this backhanded compliment type of way.

Nobody goes "I identify as straight." or "I identify as 143cm tall."

And nobody goes "I identify as female." except for the occasional misguided queer.

It's almost exclusively someone else who does the "%s identifies as %s" thing.

Every now and again I see something like "women and people who identify as women". Absolute load of garbage.

Maybe this is just autism but I don't really understand "identifying" with stuff in general? Like- I am a leftist. An atheist. A white American. A reptile lover. The closest I can kinda come to is where I prefer describing myself as gay rather then lesbian, but both words describe me and I "am" either. I'm just listing factual statements. I don't really understand how I'm "identifying" as those things. They are just literally true.

You'll have well meaning people say stuff like "female presenting people" and I'm just like "Just say "women". You won't offend the queers. Stop worrying and go have a cookie or something."
