And to anyone about to say 'those dinosaurs weren't from the Jurassic' neither were many from the movie. It's just branding.

THOSE DINOSAURS?! You mean the birds that went extinct in the 17th and 20th centuries?!

Edit: this comment annoyed me so much that I went and did research. Apparently, dinosaur no longer means reptiles that went extinct 66 million years ago. Not only are the feathery, hollow-boned bitches known as avian theropods considered dinosaurs, but everything that evolved from them also apparently gets to be called a dinosaur. Fuck that. It’s like Pluto all over again. Goddamn it.

Edit 2: You know what? Fuck that. Dinosaur means terrible lizard. If it’s not a lizard, it shouldn’t be a dinosaur. And don’t give me that shit about “it has lizard hips.” I have child-bearing hips, and it doesn’t make me a mother. Fuck you. I want to fight a paleontologist.

Edit 3: Today is my birthday, and this ruined it. We’re enemies now.

Dinosaurs aren't lizards. Dinosaurs are reptiles. Birds are reptiles. Lizards are reptiles. Squares are rectangles. Rectangles aren't squares. Pluto isnt a planet. Your mom

Hi friend! You cant evolve out of a clade. Birds are dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are fish. Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Humans are great apes, which evolved from primates. Monkeys also evolved from primates. Humans and Dinosaurs evolved (skipping many steps here) from fish. Every terrestrial animal that is not an arthropod is a fish. Hope this clears it up.

Edit: As far as your PS, crocodiles emerged at the end of the Permian mass extinction as pseudosuchians, diverging from the ornithosuchia and avemetatarsalia archosaur groups

    Edit edit: phylogenetic*

    happy belated birthday. 🎂.

If it makes you feel any better, the reason for this is that you can’t evolve out of your clade, and modern birds evolved from therapod dinosaurs.

For the same reason you can’t evolve out of your clade, humans are apes, we’re old world monkeys, and we’re also still fish.

If it makes you feel better, I hold that the proper term is Archosaur, which covers Dinosaurs, Crocodilians, and Birds. And cladistically, in terms of common ancestors, birds are and have always been reptiles.

Also, Re: the Pluto thing: what you should really be angry about is that the only reason the Moon doesn't qualify as a planet is because the IAU specifically excludes it. By all the rules, the moon would at least qualify as a binary planet with Earth, because the moon's orbit around the sun never actually crosses itself. It describes an orbit basically the same shape as the earth's. If Pluto, Ceres, and Eris aren't planets, then Luna definitely is, or their rules are not consistent.

E: removed an innacuracy. See commenter below.

The Earth-Moon barycenter is below the surface of Earth, not outside Earth's body.

Ah, thanks, I thought I'd read that it was outside, but didn't feel like doing the math to confirm in that second. I'll edit it!

E: Ah, I have figured out what it was: the Sun-Jupiter barycentre is outside the surface of the sun, and that's why the Barycentre is a bad metric. Different argument.

I hold that the proper term is Archosaur, which covers Dinosaurs, Crocodilians, and Birds.

Does that include gila monsters and komodo dragons?

No, actually, Gila monsters and komodo dragons, as Anguimorphs are, like snakes and lizards, likely to be somewhat closely-related to ancient Mosasaurs, but no other famous mesozoic creatures.

T-rex is just a wingless, featherless biped, dontcha knoo.

Also, mammals are fish. Happy birthday.

It’s like Pluto all over again.

Wait... What is your take on Pluto? Are you drawing a similarity as a taxonomic exclusivist, i.e. "Birds≠Dinosaurs::Pluto≠Planet" or as a taxonomic traditionalist, i.e. "Classifications are and shall ever be as they were in the 1960s"?

Because the conclusion we should draw about your opinion on the planethood of Pluto depends absolutely upon the taxonomic philosophy you adhere to as the lens through which you make the comparison.

Funny enough... dinosaurs weren't lizards, either. Most had feathers.

To be fair, none of the dinos in the movie were real dinosaurs. They were genetically engineered monsters. Michael Crichton said that himself.

They were all a mix of things.

e: you’re right, ‘Jurassic’ was branding.
