I have a client that's an Air Bed and Breakfast guy. He's pleasant enough as a person, but boy.

He's a janitor. From the ages to 18 to 40 (now), his day job is cleaning. But as soon as he inherited his grandparent's 3 bedroom house back in 2022, he's supplemented his income by renting it out. And because he and his wife took out a mortgage in 2021, he went from owning 0 houses to 2 in the span of 16 months. In the last couple years, with advice from his boss at his day job, he decided to shift from being a landlord (bad) to being an AirBnB host (bad, but with delusions of being a hotelier).

It's fascinating. He went from renting at the age of 16/17 after getting kicked out of home, to being a homeowner in 2021, to owning 2 houses by the end of 2022. The change in him in the last 7 or 8 years of knowing him has been... drastic. It's like observing corruption happen in real time.

At the very least, and this is a very tiny credit, he cleans the place himself.

you know, i have never been to an airbnb that didnt clean after itself. im starting to think that these 'great landlords' are actually the fucking worst of the worst, so bad that airbnb is curbing on them because of its brand awareness

Oh I mean he cleans the place himself in the sense that he descales the shower walls and scrubs the kitchen/shower and vacuums and dusts and so on. For a lot of AirBnB landlords, they offload that onto cleaners then bake the price into the asking price. Worse yet, there are those who don't even bother doing that.

oh no to be clear i am sure bnblords are terrible very often. the incentives alone lead that way

but i am envisioning a situation kinda like those grandparents rights people. the worst of the worst pretending to be reasonable

I was told one of the biggest dipshits I've ever known, who I will always rant about a little bit when he's mentioned, is currently trying to be an Airbnb guy. Also trying to be a parasite influencer despite selling one house to get another, and now has almost no one booking the new property.
