You might be right that self destruction is the only viable ending. But joining them and "feeling good" well knowing you are participating in artrocious activities and self destruction makes you an huge asshole.

No, feeling good because I don't carry the weight of the world on my shoulders anymore doesn't make me an asshole, it makes me healthy.
