By utility, I mean making a bike do more than take you from point a to point b. Adding a rack, for example, is an easy way to add more utility to a bike, since it allows you to carry things you otherwise might not be able to.

When you add more utility, the usefulness of a bike increases to more than just casual riding.

So you know how on motorcycles people have those hard "cases" at the back which close with a flap and keep the contents fully contained?

Yeah, I wish someone made those but for a bicycle. It annoys me having to worry about my stuff falling out of the basket into the road every time I go over a bump.

I use a small bungee cargo net on my baskets. They make them specifically for bike basket size. You can also get basket covers for when it rains!

Panniers may do the trick for you. I've also seen some hard cases that attach to the rack.
