He started his campaign with a large rally in Saint-Denis, attented by thousends of young people from that neigbourhood. For the Americans, that's like starting your campaign in Dearborn, Michigan and Harlem, NY at the same time.

nah his party platform actually strictly recognizes the sovereignty of the Sahel states and is intent on getting rid of the cfa franc. in addition to a plan of leaving NATO as others have mentioned. so this isn't socdem stuff we're talking about here. i do have some critiques of his party's platform and rhetoric - such as labelling the islamic republic of Iran a "regime" (e.g. "ni shah ni mollah" from manon aubry). and i am somewhat skeptical of the feasibility of the electoral path to socialism. but france has some advantages allende's chile didn't have. there is still indeed a level of "i'll believe it when i see it" for france actually joining the socialist and anti-imperialist road here but melenchon is legit
