yankee doomerism

In Bourdieu's La Distinction (no hear me out, I'm actually going somewhere with this), he describes how matters of taste (do you prefer lamb, or poultry; rock, jazz or chansons; etc., but much more in detail) correlete, on an aggregate level, with socio-economic strata, and act as signifiers which tell other people whoch segment you belong to and are formed as a reaction on the socio-economic conditions you're living - in both in the large scale class-relations way of seeing this, but also in the very mundane aspects of life. For example, certain groups in French society express a preference for pot-au-feu type meals, which need to be on the stove for 6 or 8 hours, and thus are impossible to make without a housewife, etc. You see what the general idea is.

I have this not fully fledged idea which I cannot get rid of that the American left has lost so much as a result of CIA-involvement, that they involuntarily have adopted an outspoken preference for losing a signifier. The doomerism, the idea of being an unsalvagable nation, theoryless declarations that the entire US working class are actually all Labour aristocracy etc. There are so many times I'm confronted with instances where this lens makes sense.
