I had a theory years ago that r/AmITheAsshole was a testing ground for creating a model of public respectability politics by fine tuning which events did and did not garner support for the OP / the other belligerent. "They hate cheaters but what if she's being physically abused? What if he's being physically abused? What if it's not physical but verbal abuse? What if–" and so on and so forth until you can algorithmically decide exactly how much and which bullshit you need to either dig or make up on someone for public opinion to turn on them.
