oh yea, this is totally not a political statement, i'd just really like this guy cuz he always seemed so honest. he'd slip on stuff sometimes but... how could you get mad at this shy llittle wittle guy???? impossible.

i wish you a wonderful day in which things turn to the better for you <3

digitally made voting poster for "Robert Habeck", who is a german politician. text on it says "i want ROBERT HABECK as our chancellor. why him?" then there is a list of reasons to have him be chancellor. first is "he's an absolute cutiepie" with a heart. next to that sentence he responds shily "no i'm not" which gets responded with "oh yes you are!". the following points are "looks reallly polite and honest. is really polite and honest. gets shy on interviews, likes heat pumps, is not Friedrich Merz (our current chancellor who is generally very hated), seems smart, feels pretty human". at the end the list becomes harder to read. one can barely make out the last entries "is a really sweet boy" and "looks really good". there is an image oh him holding a sign very passionately which says "I will be good, I promise". bottom left says "by maria on lemmy"

Zionism has two different meanings in how Germans use the word.

  1. The state of Israel has a right to exist.
  2. Israel has the right to be a jewish apartheids-ethnostate that actively controls it's non-jewish population.

Habeck falls firmly in the first category and stands firmly against the second one. He called the "Settlers" terrorists and heavily criticized the Israeli government. He called out brutality and that the Netanyahu government has created a different Israel than the one Germany should support.

He says the necessity exists for a state where jews can live in safety, that is a far cry from "Israel should be a jewish state".

Glad to see that your differentiation here is rather been up-, than downvoted. Thanks for speaking up!

I think the topic attracted mainly feddit.org users and most of us still know what nuance means and how Israel and Zionism are discussed in the german speaking world. shrug

But yes, I am glad too, because I have been heavily downvoted in the past on that topic. And while downvotes can be a good indicator of if one has a shittake, sometimes the purity-testing of my fellow lemmings just completely throws nuance out the window.

    They're the same thing.

If Israel is not #2, then what is it? A liberal democracy where all have equal rights? A country that allows Arabs to become the majority population? That allows them not just freedom of movement and basic human rights but also to hold positions of influence in government, industry, and culture?

At that point a country that operates in that way might be called Isreal but has a fundamentally different identity and purpose from the country that exists today. At that point does it make sense for the flag to continue to have a Star of David on it?

In what way does Israel preserve its "right to exist" if not through being an apartheid ethnostate?

    @Fitzsimmons@lemmy.blahaj.zone @cypherpunks@lemmy.ml

I owe you an answer. In the meantime someone has given it for me. Here is the Israel I support: https://youtu.be/GYr3hYjHlx8

I don't support Israel how it is, but how it should be. A liberal democracy treating all its citizens equally good. In a two state solution Israel would still be ~73% ethnically jewish, and there is no reason to believe that would change or ever change to not being a safe space for jews.

The current Israeli government should receive 0 support from any government, not even Germany, which doess have a special responsibility. But I feel that responsibility extends to a free, equal, non-apartheid Israel and not the current course. We can't support the genocide of one people out of the responsibility for that of another.

That is explicitly arguing for a "two-state solution" with 1967 borders. Is that really what you think can or should happen?

Even if you do believe that having a colonial European ethnostate there is somehow a good idea if it was just limited to those borders, nobody in Israeli politics even pretends to be open to such a thing anymore so that idea is moot.

The Israel you say that you support is a wholly imaginary one, while the one that exists is continuing to commit genocide every day.

In a two state solution Israel would still be ~73% ethnically jewish

Are you sure about that? See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Israel#Definitions : among other things, the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics' definition of "Population of Israel" includes Israelis (and does not include non-Israeli-citizen Palestinians) in "Area C" (which fyi icymi is on the Palestinian side of those 1967 borders you said you support).

Germany, which does have a special responsibility.

Doesn't it feel awkward as a German to be advocating for an ideology (Zionism) which has the core premise that... European Jews should not live in Europe?

But I feel that responsibility extends to a free, equal, non-apartheid Israel and not the current course.

How much do you know about the history of Zionism? I'm guessing not enough, because it certainly never involved any idea to have a "non-apartheid Israel". See here and here for some previous posts of mine with some links you might benefit from reading.

Uhh oh, no, I haven't answered within 9 hours, please excuse me for having a job and sleeping.

I'm thinking dude. Fitz has made some good points and I don't want to brush that off, so now I'm thinking about his arguments, formulating my own opinion, formulating and double-checking my own arguments and all that while I'm at my day job. So PISS OFF with that crickets shit back to the .ml-Sever you crawled from!

Demanding a quick answer is not the measure of a great intellect OR of a good argument. People need to take their time and think instead of just screaming at each other.

Edit: Sorry I snapped. Just... give me some time dude, life's happening at the same time.
