    I seem to recall that the enterprise needed more time to restart the engines and they used Wesley's concepts to turn the tractor beam into a 'repulser beam' to gain a few more seconds from...a comet strike? Or something like that? I'll check later tonight.

    Yep. Rewatched it, the enterprise 'wiring' had to be changed according to the chief engineer, which would take too long... I guess they decided from that point on that they could just flip between those configurations at will. Not that it helped when Frasier Crane left cheers and drove straight into their nacelle.
