I don’t get it. If anything we see Cavill performing more “firefighter” type rescues, which I take to mean natural disaster type situations with no villains to punch — burning oil rigs, floods, etc. It’s not a focus of either movie, of course.

Snyder's superman is petty and angry. He does have a natural inclination towards helping others, even though his parents spent two decades tamping that and trying to get him to put his own safety over everyone else's. But even when he's doing that, he escalates violence, does petty shit, and takes no accountability (not unlike a cop).

Dump a beer on his head? He impales your truck on a bunch of logs. Take Lois hostage? He'll splatter you through 5 brick walls. Batman steps on your turf? He'll cause him to crash his vehicle into a wall, attempt to intimidate him and issue him a threatening ultimatum.

And that's when he isn't being actively reckless and causing needless deaths and destruction of Smallville and Metropolis. His own attacks, entirely within his control, blow up gas stations, train yards, and skyscrapers. At no point before, during, or after, does he show any concern for or accept accountability for all of these deaths and this destruction. That's literally the plot setup for BvS.

The saving people from the fire on the oil rig as well as pulling the bus full of his peers out of the river are the most Superman-like he is in the entirety of the first two movies. That all happens in the first 7 minutes of the movie after leaving Krypton. The fact that over the 7 minutes after that he his scolded for saving those kids from drowning and then he turns that dude's truck into a tree pin cushion kind of undercut it really quickly though.

Snyder's Superman is a hero because it's what his Kryptonian father wanted, and Gunn's Superman is a hero because it's what his human parents taught him.

    Well that's just not true.

Snyder's Superman was most heroic at the beginning of the movie before he had even met his birth father. His instinct to save lives was innate and then suppressed by the Kents. Jor-El doesn't make him a hero. He just encourages him to embrace his powers and come out of hiding.

And honestly, I'd say the Kent's aren't exactly the reason that Gunn's Superman is a hero either. That too seems to just be an innate quality for that Superman too. The difference is that his parents set a good example of decency and humanity, and they support and encourage his heroism instead of telling him to suppress it. And he projected his wants and expectations on his Kryptonian parents too, that they sent him there to be a hero. That just turned out to be less than true (apparently).

Definitely still not getting it. They both put themselves in harm's way, right? Cavill's supes dies, even.

Have you ever heard of firefighter brutality? People dying because a firefighter was scared of you? The difference is supposed to be, that you get shot by police when they hear an acorn falling onto their hood and a firefighter will jump into a burning home to carry you out of the flames, topless and sweaty of course.

Ah, okay, so "saves people like a cop" was ironic, and it's just saying Cavill's Superman is like a cop in that he's a cowardly murderer? I was not picking up on that meaning. It's an extreme reading of the films.
