A species gradually changing is evolution, extinction is where the species dies out, bit of a difference

Well, see, the "sudden stop" is really just sudden at the time scale that Earth operates on. But in all these extinctions, where multiple species got wiped out entirely, at the scale of the species themselves it's a slow ass grind that takes multiple centuries.
