I don't get why it is parents responsibility if they are 24 and dont have any disabilities. Isn't it only parents jobs to take care of you till you are 18.

because people are need someone to blame. they can't blame themselves.

hence why you have 30+ year old children who blame 'society' for their failings, or their parents, or a ANYONE but themselves.

and if you suggest hey... maybe you can learn and work and fix these things... they don't say 'oh yeah i will do that'.

they go 'fuck you YOU HAVE NO EMAPTHY AND ARE A HORRIBLE PERSON'.

because... their entire identity and meaning in life is being a irresponsible piece of shit person who blames everyone else.

On one hand I understand showing empathy and highlighting that people might be going through mental issues, abuse. However laziness and lack personal responsibility should always be considered as possible factors as well.

Being a parent is a life long job that you chose when you had a kid, so that latter take is wild.

But in any case, even if I agreed with you, do you not believe parents have a responsibility to teach their children basic life skills? You brought a kid into the world, you should at the very least teach it how to look after itself.

Honestly your take feels wild to me as well. Sure you should teach your kids how to take care themselves, but at some point they are an adult and have to take the responsibility for their own lives.

If people don't have to take personal responsibility what stops them from taking advantage of it? Like you could have the best parents, but claim they messed you up, so refuse to work and leech of them for the rest of your life.

Having "the best parents" would preclude that possibility, though. Your "what-if" is a non-sequitur, it doesn't follow.

    no it doesn't.

plenty of shitty people i know had wonderful parents. and some great people had shitty ones.

it's a matter of the choices the person makes.

your parents don't determine what choices you make. you do.

your parents offer you a framework you can accept or reject. and plenty of people reject their parents framework.

Each person is the result of their genetics, upbringing, friend circle, life experiences etc. Having the best parents doesn't guarantee you turning out well.

Also nothing personal but using big words like this when you can express it much simpler, comes off very pretentious.

Yes, I do agree that you have a level of personal responsibility towards yourself - and that you owe it to yourself to make the best of the hand you're dealt.

But turning 18 doesn't suddenly absolve your parents of their failings. If they failed to teach Anon the basic life skills that would help them to be a proper member of society, then that is still their failure - even if it is a failure being further exacerbated by Anon themselves.

As @some_kind_of_guy@lemmy.world said, your last paragraph negates itself...

A good parent would've forced Anon to learn those skills, and wouldn't just stand-by going "they're an adult now, not my problem" - nor would they coddle them and allow them to be a NEET. Both are forms of neglectful parenting, as I said its a lifetime job.
