The Treaty of Fort Jackson (also known as the Treaty with the Creeks) was signed on this day in 1814 at Fort Jackson in Alabama. The treaty was agreed upon in the aftermath of the defeat of Red Stick (Upper Creek) resistance by U.S. forces at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend.

The treaty was the "largest single Indian cession of southern American land", according to historian Michael Rogin - around 23 million acres in Alabama and Georgia. The U.S. forces won with the battle with the help of allied Cherokee and Lower Creek forces friendly to the American side.

The terms of various treaties with the Creek nation would go on to be consistently violated by Americans colonizing the south.

You know, to link this to what we discussed about gender a bit below in this thread, I find it fascinating how I've seen so many leftists on this site willing to call out Hasan for misogyny but never at all seeming to push back on him enabling Zionism, especially when it's in the liberal form. This proves the point that white leftists tend to always think that every other contradiction matters more than the contradictions pertaining to race, imperialism, and colonial violence. Hasan making objectifying comments towards women is bad, of course, no doubt, but why is that treated as more of a moral emergency than the man devoting much of his time and energy on his hugely popular platform giving rhetorical validation to settlers (and supporters of these settlers) who are murdering a shit-ton of brown people and stealing their homes right now? They don't view Black and Brown people and those in the global south as people.

For years I've run into people who think that my centering of imperial violence as the most important thing is some weird quirk rather than a strong moral position based on a real assessment of violence. I have despaired of getting across to people at this point, because anyone who acknowledges material reality will independently come to the same conclusions I have.
