Why? For what? Ongoing tech "improvements" like this are irresponsible nowadays. As of today we aleady accomplished much progress as humans, but the need to pause, rest, recover urgently is constantly challenged.
Let us break the cycle and finally become sufficient. Especially but not exclusively within consumer electronics.
We lose finite resources, the ones of the world and our own. Including spare time. We exchange it for a distraction from reality in 8K and labor that just powers the hamster wheels which probably most of the people didnt want to enter.
Why and for what? because 50% more memory is a huge improvement, waydroid on a 8GB budget gets tight, while it fits much more comfortable in 12.
I'm not sure what to say to your other points as its a ideology i don't subscribe to, imo stagnation will get us nowhere.
I am not entirely sure if we talk about persistent or volatile memory here (english is not my first language, if its persistent the term storage fits better).
What I do not get is why there is a need for more in the first place? What makes waydroid so "hungry"?
I do not pledge for stagnation, but as progress comes with a price, I do see no need to run forward, hustling even. Instead of going slower and catch up with the people who do not even have internet access nowadays, but want it. Or the ones who are using stuff thats too slow or small for others. Lets try to align access and usage of technology worldwide. Everybody deservers progress and the experience of the advantages technology is offering.
We are talking about the volatile memory here, the LPDDR5 DRAM
Waydroid is a android container for wayland systems, what makes it so memory intensive that its basically running an full android userland, which normally is fine but since now you're running it atop your exisitng userland the total memory usage is much higher since now you are running 2 userlands instead of just one.
I am not that much into tech, but that reads like this being more of a gimmick and a niche. It is great to be able to adapt technology to ones need, but this seems to be something that average users do not think of and is far beyond detailed customization.
That said I think getting infantilised by the manufacturer or vendor, however, is annoying. In contrast curiosity and play instinct can be fun. Having fun is possbible even by being sufficient. I watch older television series, play older games, read older books. I have so much to experience without a subscription to streaming service, buying the newest gaming consoles or computing with the newest devices.
