Yea, that's a bit too on-the-nose.

Also, OHMSS is Bond's back story for why he doesn't get involved with women.

He got married and his enemies targeted (and murdered) his wife. He decided he'd never let that happen again.

So Lazenby gets the heat of a dark story too.

60's audiences weren't interested in something like that - they wanted a fun, over-the-top hero like Bond - they had enough seriousness from Post-WWII and now the Cold War from which Bond was a fun escape.
