And most Japanese animation I've seen is cheap and / or tropey junk. Making a book is cheap enough that the author has way more free rein to do what they want, even if they are dealing with a commerical genre. And there are so many books to choose from and more of them keep coming out so you'll never run out of material, the worst that could happen is you get into an ongoing series and it doesn't finish.
