A.R. Chayanov, in The Theory of Peasant Economy, showed that "precapitalist peoples will engage in wage work with a particular objective (sometimes called a 'target income') in mind (wedding expenses, the purchase of a mule) and will, contrary to microeconomic logic, work less when the wage is higher, as they will meet their objective that much sooner."
