I've found that most people who complain about moderation don't have much personal experience moderating a public forum. It's relatively easy when there's low activity but gets way harder the more participants there are.

The average person on the internet sucks. For every cool person there's 10 who have no goal but wasting time by way of trolling. It's such a thankless slog of a job that everyone expects you to perform flawlessly using the same exact standards that they believe are universal and impartial but in reality never are. It's honestly pretty incredible that anyone does it well for more than a month without just banning everyone and closing up shop.
