For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Le Bonheur (1965), a French drama from Agnes Varda, one of France’s most renowned filmmakers, whose work we have never watched on the ‘tube. That changes tonight, with one of her most acclaimed films. It centers on a housewife who finds herself in the marriage from hell when her husband decides he’s bored of her and he begins an affair with a postal worker. Drama ensues as he attempts to convince his wife that happiness can be multiplied, and that she should accept the affair. Yep, it’s a French movie. Currently ranked #478 on the Letterboxd Top 500, and one of the best-known films of the French New Wave.

After that is The Odyssey (2026), the latest blockbuster from Christopher Nolan, based on Homer’s epic poem of the same name. It follows Odysseus (Matt Damon) as he ventures home from the Trojan War to reunite with his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway); along the way, he gets up to all sorts of adventures and fights monsters and such, while Penelope has to fend off a parade of suitors. A whole of spectacle ensues, in Nolan’s ultra-serious fashion, accompanied by a relentless soundtrack of “bwaaaaaaa”. It is currently receiving rave reviews and will be one of the highest-grossing films of the year, and probably up for a bunch of awards, too. A camrip has just appeared, and it seems watchable enough (no casino commercials, at least), so let’s check it out.
