For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Dirty Pair (1985), the Sunrise anime adaptation of Haruka Takachiho’s 1980-2018 light novel series of the same name. It follows the wacky spacefaring adventures of Kei and Yuri, the “Lovely Angels”, a pair of lady bounty hunters willing to do just about any job for a quick buck. Hilarity ensues as their escapades inevitably end in the inadvertent destruction of whatever places they visit. It is pretty much Barbarella (1968), but animated; alternatively, it is Charlie’s Angels (1977) in space. The anime’s showrunners also worked on others 80s classics like Armored Troopers VOTOMS (1983) and They Were Eleven (1986). Episodes 13 through 18 tonight.

After that is Until Sbornia Do Us Part (2013), a Brazilian animated comedy starring musical comedy act Tangos & Tragédias as a bumbling musician duo from the fictional island country of Sbornia, which has lived in isolation for centuries, and developed a strange and insular culture. The wall separating Sbornia from the outside world suddenly collapses, leading to a sudden massive influx of tourists and corporate interests. The Sbornians must decide whether they will rebuild the wall or accept their inevitable drift toward modernity, with a whole lot of cultural-clashing humor along the way. Director Otto Guerra is otherwise best-known for the animated feature The City of Pirates (2018), which we have not yet watched. Great reviews for this, and its aesthetic looks cool, so let’s check it out.
