Tonight's Movie!

Part one of The Sorrow and the Pity (1969) tonight, plus some Soviet animation featuring music by Vladimir Bystryakov, who did the music for Soviet Alice in Wonderland (1982). Battlefield (1986) is an adaptation of a Stephen King story. Hopeless Wombat (1991) is an adaptation of an Australian children's story.

The Sorrow and the Pity Part One (1969)

Originally produced for French TV, this was released theatrically after the network that commissioned it realized that it makes everyone in France look like a collaborator. Oops! Marcel Ophüls interleaves interviews with citizens of the city of Clermont-Ferrand with archival footage to say something about France. If memory serves me, Part 1 is the (comparatively) more sympathetic half of the documentary. We'll see if it is.
