For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Resurrection (2025), a Chinese postmodernist, genre-busting, sort-of-sci-fi, sort-of fantasy, sort-of anthology, centering on a dystopic future in which humans have traded their ability to dream for immortality. Amidst this bleak, static hellscape, one man decides to live outside the system and dare to dream again. A woman finds this man and attempts to understand him by planting a film projector in his chest, showing her a succession of five stories, each reflecting a different dream. Director is renowned auteur Bi Gan, whose similarly surreal A Long Day’s Journey into Night (2018) we previously watched. This is one of the best-reviewed films of 2025, and one of the highest-rated Chinese films on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a shot.

Next is The Palm Beach Story (1942), a screwball rom-com from Preston Sturges, the guy behind The Lady Eve (1941), which we previously watched. It stars Joel McCrea as a cash-strapped inventor, whose wife (Claudette Colbert) comes up with a delightfully devilish idea to obtain more money for him: she will divorce him and then marry a rich business mogul, and siphon as many funds as possible to her ex. Will this plan succeed, or will the scheme be exposed before they can pull it off? Either way, a whole bunch of wacky hijinx will ensue. This is considered one of the classic screwball comedies, and one of Sturges’ best films.
