Raspberries often take a few years to really get established in my experience, especially in non-ideal soil. You might get a year or two of mostly vegetative growth before you start getting berries, which should also be enough time to get them stable enough to remove those boards. I'd give 'em something to climb on too.

Sure thing. I planted two of them a few seasons ago, and I thought I lost them entirely the first year. They died down to the ground in the fall. But they sprang back up in the spring, and now they're huge and healthy! It just took them some time to get comfortable.
