The landlord had told them he wanted to raise the rent to $3,500 and when they complained he decided to raise it to $9,500.

Source on doubled? There's no mention in the article of the initial rent

Edit: For all we know the initial rent increase could have been $50. But sure, I'm the bad guy for pointing out lack of info
