Yep. Starting in 2019 the Ads department internally defeated the Search department and successfully degraded the quality of the algorithm in order to keep people searching.

This is great! Thank you! I had heard of this exact story from third-hand sources and this is much more detailed. Ed Zitron is great and I have to deal with Google search for work a lot, and I'll probably share this article with people I know who do similar jobs
