One of the more recent jobs I worked at was in automotive manufacturing. The way they paid employees was…creative. The ad said $18.50 starting. That was the combination of $15.50 and $3. (Wtf is even that?) The larger wage was just like any other job. The lesser, was called an “attendance bonus”. They used a point system, like most places do. They also had this scheme: If you were late to work, or late coming back from a break (within reason) you would be pointed AND since your attendance is not perfect for that week, you lose the bonus (about $130). So being late cost about a whole days pay, plus (minus) 0.25-1.0 point. Oh, and it was UAW? We had the protection of a union, but with a contract that seriously could have been written by management.

Edit: I smoked weed in the parking lots on every break, and management didn’t seem to care. So that was sweet. I also showed up to one of our morning team lead meetings with a couple of live resin carts, which immediately flooded a 5ft radius with that sweet dank as soon as I unzipped my purse. I had some fun times there.
