Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier opened an investigation into OpenAI over whether the company “bears criminal responsibility” for a shooting at Florida State University last year.

The attorney general’s office said it is investigating whether OpenAI’s ChatGPT helped the suspect, Phoenix Ikner, carry out the crime.

“If that bot were a person, they would be charged with a principal in first-degree murder,” Uthmeier said at a press conference on Tuesday. “ChatGPT offered significant advice to the shooter before he committed such heinous crimes.”

This is silly and I hope the effort fails.

Right, especially since these AI companies are generally a net positive who cooperate with investigations.

It's also the case that the average user who asks about these things is asking out of pure curiosity or even is doing so just as a true crime enthusiast.

How on earth are these AI companies a net positive? They would literally burn the world around them if it made them money

2 people are dead and this AI cheerfully acted as an accomplice to plan the heinous act. But at least the company tried to save their ass after the corpses hit room temperature!
