It doesn't auto update and I think the only versions actively developed today are the iOS and Android apps. I used Winamp for a very long time myself, but ended up giving it up when I gave up Windows. Alternatively and systems other than m$win there's audacious which is a fork of XMMS/BMP and can be built with either GTK+2 or Qt5.
