There was no seating on the car ferries before, right? It's years since my family was living on the islands, but I recall having to stay in the vehicle if I wanted any kind of comfort.

That's correct. These are the brand new ones. ( Well A new one, unsure when the second one is due or already in operation. ) Heck there's even a small cafe up there. The old ones are still running. Absolutely awful in the full sun. You can get out of your car and find shade, still not fantastic.
