What I did last time I played was farm just a tiny bit of high value crops and whatever crops are needed for the community center until I was able to craft good sprinklers. And even then I farmed just enough for my needs until I got the greenhouse. The I basically only farmed grains and stuff outside. I farmed mining and fishing skills which seems more valuable. This made my second run of the fame much more enjoyable and less labourous.
