Fintraffic’s national traffic priority system, which is set to be introduced this summer, will recognise the location of an emergency vehicle and automatically change the lights to green to facilitate its passage.

We have a system like that locally. Emergency vehicles have transponders that go on when the siren turns on; all the lights in the two block radius around them turn red and a white light flashes at the intersections.

Works quite well.

Never heard of that before, what country are you in?

Lots of places in the US have things like this. It's different everywhere.

I think there's some places still using IR strobes that flash a certain pattern to change a light green. Often they're only used on main roads or really busy intersections.

Ours are still the IR strobe variety. Our state use the Opticom system. There’s a little white light and a receiver over each traffic light. When it detects an emergency vehicle, all the lights turn red and the direction the emergency vehicle is going turns green. Simultaneously, all the white lights blink except on the light that turns green — it stays solid to let people know the approaching vehicle is behind them.
