For starters, US democracy has been downgraded three times in the past six years: (1) in 2016 because international election monitors considered the 2016 election free but not fair because of Russian meddling

They took advantage of American media illiteracy and gulliability, conditions our own politicians and economic elites created. The only difference between 2016 and every other election year was it was external meddling instead of internal.
